Special Announcement: The Grand Final in Ybbs on the Danube!

A participatory project in the city of Ybbs shows the results of collaboration with citizens and the archive, research institutions and artists, initiated and coordinated by OpenGLAM.at, lead by their principles of transparency, participation and knowledge transfer.

Financially supported by the Kulturland Niederösterreich (Government of Lower Austria) for 1 year and 60.000 Euros, a team of scientists, citizens, application developers, policy makers and artists contributed (also voluntarily) to the questions

How is historical material brought into the public sphere?

What do traditional crafts have to do with the global issues of our time?

How can multimedia and multisensory data be preserved in the long term and linked for future projects?

This project is the follow-up of the former ‘Ybbs 4 Dimensions’ in 2024 where time loops as a 4th dimension were brought into the public by a live street performance. The fourth dimension of time continues to play a major role, but in the new concept of the core team of OpenGLAM.at, 3D visualisation plays a key part, which is why the title has evolved to ‘Ybbs ¾ Dimensions’.

The new focus was set up on the Schiffmeisterplatz in Ybbs. The Schiffmeisterplatz and the Schiffmeisterhaus were once a hub for a wide variety of tradespeople. In recent times, it has opened up towards the Danube and has, until now, received just little historical attention. Together with a remakable team of multidisciplinary expertise the project leader Sylvia Petrovic-Majer (OpenGLAM.at) developed fragments of perception of the history for a multisensoric experience of the Schiffmeisterplatz.

The artists Klara Wandl (Freelancing Actress), Florian Müller (Klangforum Wien) and Christoph Fereberger (Klangforum Wien) created together with citizens of the town Ybbs fragments of compositions during three workshops.

These compositions are interweaved in the mobile application designed and created by Markus Passecker and Wolfgang Aigner (USTP), who brought historical and present artefacts into the public space of the Schiffmeisterplatz. The app uses mixed reality (MR) to provide a lens into the past and making historical audiovisual media accessible while being at and around the Schiffmeisterplatz in Ybbs/Donau.

The application shows a carefully selected range of historical photographs (curated by Kathrin Kratzer) and 3D Models (digitized by Harald Wraunek).

The application invites people from the town but also tourists to explore the fragments of history in a playful way ON SITE by using a tablet. A tour can be booked at: k.kratzer@wibs.at or sylp@openglam.at

Niklas Erath (Student in Data Science) developed a pilot project how an HBIM (Heritage Building Information Modelling) scan can be used as an extended reality for exploration by a quiz game – free to explore ONLINE now! We hope you give feedback to the developer for further implementations: heritage.nckdev.at
